ER5356 is a general-purpose type aluminum alloy, which is typically chosen for its relatively high shear strength. In addition, it also offers excellent corrosion resistance when exposed to saltwater. ER5356 should be used for welding 5000 series aluminum base metals.

  • 5% magnesium aluminum (AlMg5) filler metal welding wire for MIG welding process.
  • With better corrosion resistance when exposed to saltwater and higher shear strength due to additions of magnesium.
  • ER5356 should be used for welding 5000 series aluminum base metals, 5050, 5052, 5083, 5356, 5454, and 5456.

This wire was an experiment to see if my cheapo mig machine (HF) would weld aluminum. I have tried tig welding aluminum, but very tricky and learning curve to achieve good results long. So, I decided to try the mig route. Some process notes: Clean, clean, clean......the material first with a dedicated stainless steel brush, then wipe down with acetone. Use 100% argon gas 25-30 cfh, set feed speed higher than your used to with mild steel and be prepared to push feed quicker than your used to. I also preheated a bit with propane torch. Amp setting will have to be experimented with but I got good looking welds with good penetration on 1/8 inch material at about 75 amps. I had no trouble at all with feeding the .035 wire using a 10 ft lead, but keep it as straight as possible to avoid kinking the wire. Very satisfied with product.
